How They Forecast a Cold Winter?
One day in early September the chief of a Native American tribe was asked by his tribal elders if the winter of 2011/12 was going to be cold or mild.
The chief asked his medicine man, but he too had lost touch with the reading signs from the natural world around the Great Lakes.
In truth, neither of them had idea about how to predict the coming winter.
However, the chief decided to take a modern approach, and the chief rang the National Weather Service in Gaylord Michigan.
‘Yes, it is going to be a cold winter,’ the meteorological officer told the chief.
Consequently, he went back to his tribe and told the men to collect plenty of firewood.
A fortnight later the chief called the Weather Service and asked for an update.
‘Are you still forecasting a cold winter?’ he asked.
‘Yes, very cold’, the weather officer told him.
As a result of this brief conversation the chief went back to the tribe and told his people to collect every bit of wood they could find.
A month later the chief called the National Weather Service once more and asked about the coming winter.
‘Yes,’ he was told, ‘it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever.’
‘How can you be so sure?’ the chief asked.
The weatherman replied: ‘Because the Native Americans of the Great Lakes are collecting wood like crazy.’
Born Out Of Necessity
So the task at hand is to grow the online enterprise clientele without the resources that are available to the traditional marketers.
Traditional marketers use expensive resources such TV,radio, newspapers, and magazines for the corporate and other physical companies.
Did the traditional marketers take their skills and marketing techniques to the online environment?
Some definitely took their skills but bricks and mortar business advertising didn’t transfer over.
But the traditionalists brought marketing concepts online as the potential WWW market opened up.
But it was the growth hacker who was online oriented that brought the technical ideas to the fold.
Obviously, they wanted the same results as the traditionalist, but without the funds to submit expensive advertising campaigns.
Traditional marketers brought marketing concepts and funds, but the growth hackers were the ones who were able to implement online marketing techniques and solutions.
Technically oriented growth hackers saw the functionally of SEM and put organic SEO into practice.
Traditionalists provided the IM mindset, and the hackers provided the technical expertise and new way of IM marketing.
Together they developed email marketing, with the traditionalists’ compelling copy and the ghackers’ links and landing pages.
Search engine marketing,or SEM,and email marketing, became the predominant IM forces.
The growth hacker, equipped with technical skills of the tech savvy generation, introduced cost saving internet marketing methods.
These included split testing, social media virality, squeeze pages, newly scripted IM emails with hyperlinks, organic SEO,and the all-important results- testing or analytics.
These internet marketing technical innovations,by the growth hackers, were very cost effective.
With the Internet expanding, scaling up the successful techniques expanded the customer base of the startups, while holding down the cost of traditional marketing.
So growth hacking is not a title,it’s a concept.
It really reflects the American way, that neccessity is the mother of invention.
The new internet companies needed a large clientele from which to build a large viable customer base, and the new wave of highly technical marketers filled that need.
What can be learned from this from the perspective of the small online business owner?
How does the growth hacking concept apply to your online enterprise?
Basically, this new wave of technical marketers led the way,and the techniques that were born out of necessity have become embedded in the new internet marketing model.
This is especially true for the online internet marketing companies, that do not have an offline presence.
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. T. S. Eliot
